It was in April 2005 when a young man from California called Jawed Karim invited a video to the Internet. It was entitled “Me at the Zoo” and showed Karim in front of an elephant enclosure. Hit unspectacular, but this video was the start of the video platform YouTube. Originally, Karim and his two co-founders intended to make a dating platform out of it. But after the users prefer to open videos from their pets or their vacation destinations, YouTube became what it is today: a video platform for pretty much everything that interests people.
Just 1.5 years after the foundation, the Google Group took over the successful startup for the equivalent of 1.31 billion euros. Since then, the YouTube has always caused controversy: because of copyright violations, the excessive collection of user data or the spread of fake news.
Anyway, we congratulate on a milestone birthday, take a look back, but also one forward. Ulla Ebner reports how the internet platform will continue.
