Armenian media and bloggers accuse the Yerevan mayor’s office of wasting public money and participating in cut-and-kickback schemes.
As Day.Az reports with reference to the Armenian media, on December 6, 2023, the Yerevan City Hall signed a contract for the purchase of 75 benches from one of the local companies. The benches were to be made from decking boards that did not need to be varnished. For each bench, the Yerevan City Hall paid 137 thousand drams (340 US dollars), that is, for 75 benches – 10 million 284,000 drams (about 25,500 US dollars). But, as Armenian media outlets managed to find out, they are made of ordinary wood and cost several times less than the paid price.
According to Armenian furniture specialists, the installed benches, manufactured in accordance with the requirements, would cost the city treasury twice as much.
The media noted that less than a month had passed, the varnish began to leak from the benches in places. They also emphasize that the benches were fixed to the tiles with cement.
Local media and bloggers also note that the Yerevan City Hall paid 800 thousand drams for a bicycle parking facility (about $2,000) installed on the shore of Lake Yerevan.
