Berlin Bids to Host 2029 World Table Tennis Championships

The German capital faces competition from Brazil, China, and the USA as the ITTF prepares to announce the host city at its Annual General Meeting in Doha.

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) will decide on Tuesday whether Berlin will host the 2029 World Table Tennis Championships at its Annual General Meeting in Doha. the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) formally presented its bid on Monday, following the conclusion of the World Championships sporting events.

The DTTB is promoting Berlin as a host city, emphasising its compact infrastructure, commitment to sustainability, extensive experience in organising major international events, and the enthusiastic support expected from German fans. The last time germany hosted the World Cup was in Düsseldorf in 2017.

Strong Competition for hosting Rights

“We go into the race confidently and with a lot of fighting spirit,” saeid Dr. Wolfgang Dörner, the DTTB CEO since March. “Our capital is also an attractive goal for tourism.Germany is a sports enthusiastic nation. The enthusiastic fans ensure goosebumps atmosphere. The DTTB is also established as a reliable host of international events,” he added, while acknowledging the strong competition.

Australia and Iraq have recently withdrawn their bids, leaving China, Brazil, and the USA as the remaining contenders alongside Germany.

Rivals’ Proposals

China, a dominant force in table tennis, is leveraging its global network and the recent appointment of two-time Olympic champion and eleven-time world champion Wang Liqin as the new association president, succeeding Liu Guoliang. Wang aims to secure a important sports policy achievement early in his tenure. While initially interested in hosting all three years of the World Cup, China is now focused on 2029.

Brazil’s bid would mark a historic first, bringing the World Cup to south America for the first time since the championships began in 1926.
