Rome (dpa) – US director Woody Allen sees little chance of a comeback on the screen given his age. “There aren’t many good roles for people my age,” said the 90-year-old on Monday evening on the Italian television show “Cinque Minuti”. He doesn’t want to make any of these films “in which these old gentlemen appear and the audience only comes to see that these people are still alive.”
But Allen didn’t want to completely rule out a comeback on the big screen. Only a really suitable and interesting role offer could bring him back in front of the camera, he said. “If a good role came along that suited me, I would definitely play it because I love acting.”
The multiple Oscar winner has already made dozens of films (“The Urban Neurotic”, “Hannah and Her Sisters”, “Midnight in Paris”) and has stood in front of and behind the camera. Allen presented his first novel entitled “What’s with Baum?” on the TV show. The book tells the story of Asher Baum, a middle-aged Jewish man whose career as a novelist falls apart as quickly as his relationship with his wife.
