Wismar will also incur new debts this year. However, the loss for the past year is smaller than expected.

Wismar made a loss of around 8.4 million euros in 2025. The budget planning actually assumed a loss of around 17.5 million euros. This emerges from the preliminary financial results for 2025, which Wismar’s mayor Thomas Beyer (SPD) presented to the citizens on Thursday evening. He emphasized that this was not a satisfactory result. A loss in the millions is again planned for 2026, said Beyer. The city administration hopes to be able to compensate for the deficit, for example with money from the state’s special fund. The loan repayment increases the loss amount.

Beyer also announced that the city of Wismar used around 3.7 million euros to repay investment loans. Without this repayment, the budget loss would have been around 4.7 million euros. At the end of 2024, investment loans amounted to 73.4 million euros.
