Semester break can reshape a basketball team. Classes are done. Practice time is bountiful. There is time to rest and reflect on the first two months of the season while preparing for conference play.
Those benefits only come with the proper attitude. Coach Paul Mills saw some of those attitude plays go Wichita State’s way in last week’s win at Northern Iowa. He sees that attitude in practices leading up to Saturday’s 11 a.m. game vs. DePaul (ESPNU) at Koch Arena.
“If you’re juice-less, you’re useless,” Mills said Thursday. “The guys have had tremendous juice.”
Now it is time for those players to get better with the Shockers looking at three home games before American Conference play starts on Dec. 31 at UAB.
“It’s such a critical time,” Mills said. “I think the guys have been great in how they’ve attended school and handled their business. We’ve got to get a ton out of it. You have to use this time in order to get ready for conference.”
The Shockers (6-4) practice at 10 a.m. this week to prepare for Saturday’s game against the Blue Demons (7-3). No matter the tipoff time, Mills wants his team to show the hustle and physical play it did frequently to beat UNI 74-69 in overtime. He was disappointed in the 50-50 balls that did not go WSU’s way during an 0-3 trip to the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Those loose basketballs, he told the team, needed to be Shocker possessions.
“People came up to me and said, ‘You know what, Fred VanVleet makes that,'” Mills said, referencing a play late in a loss to St. Mary’s. “‘P.J. Couisnard (current assistant coach) makes that play.’ I had to remind our guys. As Shockers, we make that play. There was a brand of basketball that started long before any of us got here. You make tough plays.”
The Shockers graded out better in turning 50-50 balls into 100-percent balls against the Panthers. Mills wants the Shockers to record at least 30 deflections while on defense. They got to 28 against UNI.

“I think we’re getting closer to things that really impact winning,” he said. “I thought our approach was better. I thought our willingness to get to basketballs was better.”
An offensive rebound by center Will Berg provided Mills and example of playing with the kind of force he wants. With the Shockers down 69-68, Berg grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, giving them the lead for good. Mills pointed out that Berg wasn’t enjoying a great game yet came up with a crucial hustle play.
“There’s a lot of times guys will check out, and he didn’t and gets an offensive rebound,” Mills said. “I do think that they’re embracing more of what’s required to wear this uniform.”
Nobody did more good things late in that game than freshman TJ Williamswho scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 37 minutes. Williams scored seven of his points in overtime.
Earlier in the game, Mills challenged Williams after a bad stretch that included a turnover and a missed free throw.
“I brought him over and said ‘Listen, we need to step up,'” Mills said. “‘You’ve done enough to handle these moments.’ I put him back in and I thought he was assertive.”
