Lewis King to Captain England in Wheelchair Rugby League Ashes Series

World Cup winner Lewis King of the London Roosters will captain England when they travel to Australia for the wheelchair rugby league Ashes series in October. King, 40, assumes the role as regular captain Tom Halliwell is sidelined with a shoulder injury. Jack Brown, a Halifax Panthers player with four years of coaching experience in Australia, has been appointed vice-captain.
King, hailing from Kent, experienced partial paralysis in 2009 at the age of 24 due to a blood clot on his spine, necessitating a 21-hour emergency operation. He began his wheelchair rugby league career in 2016 with the Dartford-based Argonauts before joining the England squad.
King reflected on his appointment: “Wheelchair rugby league is a special sport and the England squad are a special group, so being appointed as captain is just incredible – especially for a bloke from Dartford who wouldn’t have known anything about rugby league growing up.”
King contributed a try to England’s 28-24 victory over France at Manchester Central in November 2022, securing the Wheelchair Rugby League World cup.Brown scored two tries in that match.

England head coach Tom Coyd expressed his admiration for the new captain: “To tell lewis King that he will captain his country was an immense privilege for me.” He added, “The journey he has been on since suffering a life-changing injury 16 years ago is inspirational.”
