The Bethel University men’s hockey team achieved a significant milestone by securing their second consecutive appearance in the MIAC Playoffs. They accomplished this impressive feat with a decisive 3-1 victory against St. Olaf during their weekend opener on Friday night at home.
Bethel University Earnings No. 2 Seed Again
Bethel earned the second seed for the playoffs for the second consecutive year, following Gustavus’s narrow 6-5 overtime victory over Hamline. As a top seed, BU will host a semifinal game on Saturday, March 1st, at 7 p.m. against the third seed in the playoffs.
Key Performances from Bethel’s Stars
Jake Herter demonstrated exceptional skill with a shorthanded goal, intercepting a pass near St. Olaf’s blue line and scoring with 2:14 to go in the first period. This goal was Herter’s third of the season, contributing significantly to Bethel’s early lead.
Joe Westlund added to Bethel’s offensive prowess early in the game, showing quick reflexes by scooping up a loose puck near the right circle and securing a 2-0 advantage. The quick tap-in got past the opposing goaltender, highlighting Westlund’s efficiency in front of the net.
St. Olaf managed to close the gap with a man-advantage goal at the 13:20 mark of the second period. Despite one power-play goal and going 1-for-5 on the night, St. Olaf failed to close the gap further.
Tight Third Period Leads to Empty Netter Victory
The third period was a tight one. Bethel excelled in penalty killing with zero goals allowed, while their one power play fell short despite four shots. Tyler Braccini, leading the team with 17 goals, sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final moments, putting Bethel ahead 3-1.
Goalie Austin Ryman and Faceoff Hero Jack Brown
Austin Ryman solidified his position as a dependable goaltender, making 23 saves in the victory. Jack Brown’s performance in faceoffs stood out as he won 16 out of 24 attempts, contributing greatly to the overall team effort.
