WhatsApp, messages

WhatsApp is significantly expanding its data protection functions: The messenger is now testing self-destruction timers of just one and twelve hours. The Meta Group is thus responding to a long-held user demand for shorter deletion periods for sensitive data.
The new options were discovered in the current beta versions for Android and WhatsApp Web. They close the gap between the previous settings of 24 hours and seven days. For many users, the previous shortest period of one day was simply too long for highly sensitive information such as passwords or bank details.
The 1 hour timer is explicitly aimed at high-security contexts. This setting is ideal for one-time passwords, temporary login details or confidential banking information. Such content should not remain in the chat history longer than necessary. Automatic deletion after 60 minutes reduces the risk of sensitive data falling into the wrong hands – for example if the device is lost.

Many short-term timers are practical – but they do not protect against screenshots or the forwarding of sensitive content. The 12 hour timer however, addresses the typical working day. This duration is perfect for daily coordination: shift schedules, same-day appointments or delivery information. Such news is relevant for a few hours, but becomes digital ballast by the next morning. This media option offers a “set it and forget it” solution to daily communication hygiene.
Parity between mobile and desktop
Particularly noteworthy: The new timers should be available for the mobile app at the same time WhatsApp Web be introduced. Until now, the desktop version has often lagged behind when it comes to new functions. The integration into the web client is particularly relevant for professional users who use WhatsApp on the computer.
The ability to set shorter deletion periods directly from the desktop increases utility in corporate environments with strict retention policies. The timers are designed to sync seamlessly between mobile and desktop. A timer set on the computer also deletes the messages on the recipient’s smartphone.
Competitive pressure and data protection debate
With the shorter timers, WhatsApp is getting closer to competitors like Signal and Telegram to. They have long offered highly customizable self-destruction timers – sometimes in the range of seconds. Meta is thus responding to a competitive market in which user control is becoming a key differentiator.
Data protection experts generally welcome the development, but urge caution. Shorter timers reduce the digital trail, but don’t prevent recipients from taking screenshots or forwarding messages before they disappear. WhatsApp is expected to incorporate visual cues that inform conversation participants about active short-term timers.
The update reflects a broader trend: “transience through design.” Given the growing mountains of digital data, users are increasingly preferring platforms that automate the clean-up process. The 12-hour timer recognizes that not every conversation needs to be retained as a permanent record.
When are the new timers coming?
Meta has not yet confirmed an official global release date. Typically, features from the beta channel move to the stable version within a few weeks or months – depending on stability and user feedback.
Experts expect that the introduction will be server-side. Users then do not need a manual app update as long as they are using a current version. In the coming weeks, the new options should appear in the “Make Messages Disappear” menu – alongside the existing settings for 24 hours, 7 days and 90 days.
