WhatsApp Security: New Fraud Warning – Update Now

Online fraud is becoming more and more common, and criminals have been using the popular messenger for this for a long time. But Meta now clearly wants to put a stop to this WhatsApp-Update therefore brings a new function to the cell phones.

WhatsApp update brings new security warning about fraud

In an official announcement on March 11th, Meta announced that new security functions would now be introduced on Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp. These are primarily intended to protect you from fraud. The WhatsApp update brings new security warnings for this case.

These should always appear when fraudsters try to get you to link your WhatsApp account to their device. This often happens more often and faster than might initially be expected. You could be tricked into scanning a QR code under false pretenses, which would link the criminal’s device to your account.

Just one of many measures

“To get ahead of these tactics, WhatsApp will now notify you when behavioral signals indicate that a link request may be suspicious,” Meta explains. The notifications will then show you where the request came from and at the same time warn that it could be a scam.

This gives you an important opportunity to pause the process and think about whether you really want to link your device and your WhatsApp account to the other device. Fraudsters often take advantage of time pressure and the resulting rash actions.

Meta promises that the WhatsApp update is not the only measure the company is using to combat cybercrime. The company said: “We aggressively combat fraud activity to protect people and businesses. Last year alone, we removed over 159 million fraud ads, 92% of which we removed before anyone reported them. We also deleted 10.9 million accounts on Facebook and Instagram associated with criminal fraud hubs.”
