WhatsApp expands group messaging with a new feature, Group Message History. The novelty offers a solution to the long-standing problem that new members of the group could not see the previous conversations, so they did not know the history and context. The new feature allows new participants to see past messages so they can catch up on the flow of the conversation more quickly.
For data protection reasons, the system still does not provide full access to the entire history of the group. When adding to a group, the app asks the user how many past messages they want to share with the new member. Optionally, the last 25, 50, 75 or 100 messages can be forwarded. The shared conversation is visually separated from normal messages: the time stamps, the names of the senders, and the message stream itself are also marked separately. The system notifies the other members of the group when the history is shared.
The development could be an important advantage over Telegram and iMessage services. With the former, it is possible to share the message history, but only in its entirety or not at all, partial sharing is not possible. And Apple’s messaging platform doesn’t offer a similar feature at all. It is important, however, that the decision to share the history can only be made when adding the member: if this is not done, the new participant must be removed and then added again to share the desired amount of messages.
