WhatsApp is set to introduce advertising and a subscription model, aiming to generate revenue for Meta. How will this impact users?

Co-founder jan Koum once declared, “No games, no advertising, no frills,” before selling WhatsApp to Facebook. Years later, Koum and Brian Acton departed due to disagreements over advertising. Now, their concerns are materializing as WhatsApp plans to display ads to users.

Meta announced the change, framing it positively: “Find more channels and companies on WhatsApp that suit you.” The company suggests users will “find new companies and exchanges with them for news about products or services that you will advertise in your status.”

How Ads Will appear in WhatsApp

The initial focus is on the Status feature, which has traditionally displayed content from a user’s contacts. Users can now subscribe to channels from companies and organizations. These channels will have two options for presenting advertisements.

The first is traditional advertising. As users swipe through statuses, they may encounter ads for specific products. These are essentially status posts from subscribed companies, allowing them to reach a broader audience.

The second involves WhatsApp promoting companies that users do not currently follow. These will appear in the suggested channels list.whatsapp states that this feature will “help you discover new and captivating channels for you” and provide admins with “the possibility to increase the visibility of your channel.”

The third monetization method involves channels offering paid subscriptions, allowing operators to generate income directly. These subscriptions will only affect users who actively choose to subscribe.

What About Chats?

Chats, the core feature for most WhatsApp users, will remain ad-free “for the time being,” according to whatsapp. “Our goal is to develop a business model that doesn’t bother your personal chats,” the company explains.”We believe that the current tab is the right place for these new functions.” Chats will remain separate from status ads.

This suggests that users who primarily use WhatsApp for communication with contacts via chats, groups, or calls will not be affected by advertising. WhatsApp reports that 1.5 billion people use the status function daily, while the messenger has over two billion active users.

Just the Beginning?

The long-term impact of advertising remains to be seen.Othre Meta platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook, initially introduced advertising cautiously but gradually increased its presence. It is now common to see ads from companies that users do not follow in stories. A similar trend could develop on whatsapp.

Advertising within chats is not entirely off the table. While WhatsApp emphasizes chat encryption, this is not a fundamental barrier. Facebook Messenger already allows companies to send advertising messages directly to users, displayed in the chat overview. WhatsApp itself recently used this method to promote new features.
