WARSAW – A seven-year-old boy died in Warsaw‘s Ursus district after choking on jelly candies at night. His parents found him unconscious in the morning, rescuers fought for his life for more than an hour, but in vain. The police are investigating the case as a tragic accident.

Grief and shock hit a residential house in Warsaw’s Ursus. A seven-year-old child lost his life there on the night of Sunday to Monday after choking on jelly candies. According to the information brought by the Polish portal Polsat News, the boy apparently got up in the middle of the night, took sweets and then fell asleep with them in his mouth.

“All indications are that the boy got up in the night and put jelly candies in his mouth. Then he fell asleep. There was an obstruction of the airway,” priblížil pre Polsat News Piotr Owczarski from the Provincial Emergency Medical Station “Meditrans” in Varšave.

His parents found him motionless in the morning. They immediately called for help, but despite an hour of resuscitation, the rescuers were unable to restore the child’s vital functions.

The investigation is ongoing, no fault is assumed

Police patrols also arrived at the scene of the tragedy. The report was received around 8:15 a.m. on Chełmońskiego Street. According to spokeswoman Małgorzata Gębczyńska, the police worked under the supervision of the prosecutor. “From the beginning, they carried out actions under the supervision of the prosecutor. The findings show that it was not someone else’s fault, but an unfortunate event,” she told Polsat News.

Paramedic Owczarski confirmed that there was sudden circulatory failure. “The rescue team intervened. The rescuers fought for the boy’s life for more than an hour. Unfortunately, he could not be saved,” he added.

The police reported that the boy was at home under the supervision of one of his parents at the time of the incident. The location remained secure for investigation purposes.

A sad warning for parents

Although this is a tragic accident, the case raises the painful question of the safety of children when consuming sweets and small foods, which can easily block the airways – especially during sleep or unobserved eating.
