On the road to vacation, the fear of running out of fuel changes for motorists who have abandoned the combustion engine. A transformation is taking place on our express routes to reassure long-distance travelers.
The motorway represents the ultimate test for electric mobility. If everyday journeys no longer pose any autonomy problems thanks to home charging, the great summer transhumance still crystallizes the anxieties of drivers. Road infrastructure managers have perfectly understood that the sustainability of their economic model will depend on their ability to streamline these exceptional traffic peaks. The challenge is no longer to offer a simple socket, but to guarantee a dense and reliable network to avoid congestion.
The switch to rest areas on the Vinci motorways
The operator VINCI Autoroutes has just completed a year of densification of its equipment. The 2025 report shows the installation of 284 new connection pointsdistributed in such a way as to relieve congestion on the main roads. All main service areas having been equipped since summer 2023, the manager now targets secondary zones. Thus, 20 rest areas are welcoming fast terminals for the first time. This is an important shift for the dealership which seeks to disperse the flow of vacationers to avoid endless queues. In addition, the most requested existing stations received the reinforcement of around a hundred terminals.
This acceleration in the number of charging stations responds to very clear pressure in demand. According to the operator, hookup sessions jumped by half last year to approach three million visits. This success is based on opening up to competition. Around ten distinct operators share the concessions, guaranteeing drivers to find a terminal compatible with their payment card. The layout of these new refueling areas deliberately breaks with the purely functional aesthetic of the old fuel pumps. The designers integrate large canopies to shelter users from bad weather, while producing electricity via solar panels reinjected into the station circuit.
Human management of traffic peaks
The real test by fire for these charging infrastructures takes place during the summer crossovers. The fear of having to wait two hours under the blazing sun before accessing a terminal remains the absolute repellent for the buyer of a
battery car. To defuse this tension, assistance teams dressed in blue or red vests are stationed in around sixty areas with very high traffic. These agents direct the cars, help handle the often heavy cables and unblock stubborn applications.
This human support is essential
to oil a mechanism which still lacks naturalness for a large part of the buyers. The year 2026 continues this consolidation with the connection of four additional rest areas from the first half of the year. Seven major service stations will see their capacities expand as a result. Road operators know that they stake their credibility on the fluidity of these stops. The future of their tolls rests on the promise of making long-distance travel as predictable as in the all-oil era.
