Vancouver Canucks’ Surprise Move: Elias Pettersson Jr. Makes NHL Debut
Fans who are not deeply versed in the Vancouver Canucks’ roster might find themselves puzzled while watching tonight’s game against the Washington Capitals. One of the team’s biggest stars, 26-year-old Elias Pettersson, is not the only Pettersson under the Canucks’ umbrella.
The Misunderstood Pettersson Junior
The Canucks made a improbable yet hilarious selection in the 2022 draft when they chose defenceman Elias Pettersson, son of their celebrated forward, with the 80th overall pick. At 20 years old, the younger Pettersson has spent his rookie season in the AHL but is set to make his NHL debut against the Capitals.

Pettersson Jr. Set to play on Second Pair
Elias Pettersson Junior, who has logged one goal and 12 assists in 36 games with the Abbotsford Canucks, will be paired alongside Carson Soucy on the second defensive unit. This move comes as a replacement for Mark Friedman, who featured in the Canucks’ last two games against the Edmonton Oilers and Buffalo Sabres.
“It means a lot,” Pettersson Jr. stated to reporters. “I’m really excited. It’s going to be fun.”
Other Roster Changes
The Canucks are also dealing with the suspensions and injuries impacting their lineup. Tyler Myers is sidelined indefinitely for cross-checking Evan Bouchard, while Noah Juulsen is on injured reserve due to an undisclosed injury. The team has recalled Pettersson Jr. from minor-league action to bolster their defencive options.
Forward Kiefer Sherwood, who left Thursday’s game due to an unspecified injury, missed the team’s morning skate today. Head coach Rick Tocchet indicated that Sherwood may not make the game. Other potential game-day decisions are also being evaluated.
The Hopeful Return of Joshua
Amidst these changes, the Canucks received some encouraging news. Dakota Joshua, who suffered an injury on January 3 against the Nashville Predators, skated for the first time in over a month. The 28-year-old forward, who scored 18 goals in the 2023-2024 season, has been limited to just 24 games on ice thus far.

Lankinen Rejoins the Lineup
Kevin Lankinen will return to the crease after a brief spell on the sidelines due to illness. Having last played against the Ottawa Senators on January 14, the goaltender was able to back up Thatcher Demko in Thursday’s game.
Wild-Card Push Continues
This evening’s contest is critical for the Canucks, who currently stand just three points behind the Calgary Flames for a wild-card spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
