Health authorities and infectious disease specialists warned about the importance of flu vaccination and maintaining respiratory hygiene practices to prevent the spread of influenza A H3N2, popularly known as “Flu K,” after its confirmation in circulation in Argentina.
Vaccination was identified as the main prevention tool, especially for the most vulnerable sectors of the population, including older adults, young children, pregnant women and people with chronic diseases. In addition, it was highlighted that the flu vaccine available in the country must be applied once a year to have a protective effect.
Likewise, the specialists highlighted that, although the use of a mask is not mandatory for the entire population, it is recommended for people with risk factors and in situations of contagion or crowds, as an additional measure of protection.
Hygienic practices suggested to reduce transmission include frequent hand washing, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact in closed or crowded spaces. Emphasis was also placed on cross ventilation in indoor environments to minimize the concentration of viruses in the air.
The warnings are given in a context where it is expected that the circulation of Influenza K may increase beyond usual and come earlier in the seasonal calendar of respiratory viruses, similar to what is observed in other regions of the northern hemisphere. Therefore, the combination of vaccination and collective care measures is considered the most effective strategy to mitigate the health impact.
Specialists also pointed out that, although there is no need to be alarmed, it is key to inform the population about warning signs, especially in those who present more severe symptoms or belong to groups with higher risks of complications.
In summary, the central recommendation is to complete the influenza vaccination cycle and maintain respiratory hygiene measures to protect both individuals and communities against the circulation of Influenza K in the current season.
