Amid rising tensions over defense spending, Japan has reportedly canceled high-level security talks with the United States. The move follows a demand from the U.S. to increase Japan’s defense spending to 3.5% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to a report in the Financial Times (FT).

The U.S. and Japan had planned to hold a “2+2” meeting in Washington D.C. in July, involving U.S. Secretary of State MARCO RUBIO, U.S. Secretary of Defense PETE HAGES, Japanese foreign Minister, and Japanese Defense Minister NAKATANI GEN. These talks are considered crucial for discussing diplomacy and security issues between the two nations.

Though, Japan reportedly canceled the talks after the U.S. demanded that Japan’s defense spending reach 3.5% of GDP. The U.S. request was reportedly spearheaded by former U.S. Defense Minister ELBRIDGE COLBY.

Japan’s Stance on Defense Spending

Japanese Prime Minister SHIGERU ISHIBA stated during a March budget committee meeting, “Japan’s defense costs are determined by Japan. Japan’s defense costs are not determined as the United States or other countries do.” He emphasized, “I will not discuss crude discussions that set a few percentage of defense costs.”

US Concerns and Regional Implications

former US White House National Security Council (NSC) East Asian officer CHRISTOPHER JOHNSTON commented on the postponement,stating,”2+2 talks are beauty·It is a very high priority because it is a politically valuable possibility to show the power of the alliance.” He added, “Japan’s decision to postpone the talks after the election is a signal that there is a great anxiety about the current status and prospects of bilateral relations…japan seems to have determined that if the meeting is held before the election, the political burden is greater than the profit.”

Sence President TRUMP’s reelection, the United States and Japan have engaged in complex negotiations on security and trade. Tensions have been simmering since President WALL TRUMP imposed tariffs, leading to difficult trade discussions. The Japanese Defense Ministry has declined to comment officially on the cancellation of the talks, stating that the next “2+2” meeting has not yet been decided.

Analysts suggest that the disagreement over defense cost-sharing and diplomatic trust could escalate due to complex political factors within Japan. The United States’ assertive stance on increasing defense spending among its allies is expected to significantly impact the security order in the Asia-Pacific region.
