Heightened Vigilance: Uruguay Responds to Measles Surge
In response to escalating measles outbreaks across the Americas, especially in neighboring Argentina, Uruguayan health authorities are urging citizens to ensure they are fully vaccinated against the highly contagious disease. The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) issued an alert ahead of Tourism week, emphasizing the importance of vaccination for travelers.
The Contagious Nature of Measles
Mónica Castro, director of Epidemiology at the MSP, underscored the highly transmissible nature of measles, stating it is the most transmissible of communicable diseases.
The virus spreads rapidly through the air, direct contact, or secretions. Symptoms include rash, fever, respiratory issues, and conjunctivitis, with individuals being contagious even before symptoms manifest.
Regional Outbreaks and Global Trends
The Pan American Health Association (PAHO) reports a five-fold increase in measles cases in the Americas during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year, jumping from 91 to 507 cases. This surge is attributed to low infant vaccination rates and increased cross-border movement.Active outbreaks are confirmed in Argentina (14 cases), the USA (301 cases), Canada, and Mexico, leading PAHO to assess the regional propagation risk as “high.” While Brazilian authorities have stated there is no community propagation within their borders, the overall trend is concerning.
Globally, measles cases have seen a dramatic resurgence. Europe recorded over 127,000 cases in 2024, doubling the previous year’s figures. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 10.3 million cases worldwide in 2023, a 20% increase.
Vaccination: The Key to Prevention
Low vaccination coverage remains a critical factor in the resurgence of measles. In the Americas, only 28.6% of countries achieve vaccination coverage greater than 95% for the first dose of the triple viral vaccine (SPR), and a mere 16.7% reach this level for the second dose. These figures fall significantly short of the levels required to prevent community propagation. measles, a highly contagious disease, spreads through the air and saliva droplets, infecting between 75% and 90% of unvaccinated individuals who come into contact with the virus. Complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis can arise, with mortality rates reaching up to 10% and 30% in vulnerable populations.
The MSP recommends that anyone with a single dose or doubts about their vaccination status receive a free injection at any health center.
Call to Action: Intensified Efforts Needed
PAHO and WHO are urging countries to intensify surveillance and vaccination campaigns, address misinformation surrounding vaccines, and promote regional vaccine production to curb the resurgence of measles. These efforts are crucial to protecting vulnerable populations and preventing further spread of the disease.

Addressing Other Public Health Concerns
In related news, the MSP of Uruguay also highlighted a significant increase in cases of violence and child abuse. Minister Cristina Lusternberg reported that cases rose dramatically from 900 in 2007 to 9,000 in 2023. The official emphasized the need for intergovernmental efforts and state support to address this crisis and provide support for affected children.
