Donald Trump’s Controversial Suggestion to Relocate Gaza Population Sparks International Reactions
Amidst ongoing turmoil in Gaza, US President Donald Trump has proposed a contentious solution: relocating most of Gaza’s population to Egypt and Jordan. This radical idea, announced during a press conference aboard Air Force One, has sparked outrage, particularly among Palestinians and Arab nations.
Trump’s Proposal and Its Impact
Trump stated, “I’d like Egypt to take people. And I’d like Jordan to take people. You’re talking about a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing.” This scheme would fundamentally alter long-standing US policy, which has traditionally advocated for a two-state solution in the Middle East, envisioning a Palestinian state alongside Israel in Gaza and parts of the occupied West Bank.
The president revealed that he had already discussed this proposal with King Abdullah II of Jordan and planned to bring it up with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in an upcoming call.
Challenging Arab Receptions
Amman and Cairo have staunchly opposed any relocation of Palestinians, viewing it as a betrayal of the Palestinian cause and risking conflict with Israel.
Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, emphasized the kingdom’s firm stance against displacement, asserting that ensuring Palestinians remain on their land is a priority. He stated, “The rejection of any displacement of the Palestinians is … firm and unwavering.”
Egypt, too, has dismissed the idea. The country’s foreign ministry underlined its rejection, emphasizing the protection of Palestinians’ inalienable rights and opposing any form of forced displacement as “ethnic cleansing.”
Humanitarian and Geopolitical Concerns
Hamas, the Gaza-based militant group, strongly condemned the proposal, stating that Palestinians “categorically reject any plans to deport or displace them from their land.” They urged Egypt and Jordan to resist such moves.
Senior fellow at Center for American Progress, HA Hellyer, warned that such a transfer could be destabilizing, especially for Jordan, which already hosts a significant Palestinian population. He added, “Emptying Gaza of its inhabitants would not have any support from the Arabs, or even internationally, because it is the definition of ethnic cleansing.”
The proposal could also strain relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, undermining prospects for normalization, a strategic US goal in the region.
Support from Israeli Far Right
In contrast, far-right Israeli officials welcomed Trump’s idea. Finance minister Bezalel Smotrich called it a “wonderful idea,” advocating for outside-the-box solutions to achieve peace and security. Itamar Ben-Gvir, the former Israeli national security minister, lauded Trump for suggesting the plan.
The Pentagon confirmed that it had lifted a hold on delivering 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, a decision made by the Biden administration.
Tensions in the Ceasefire
The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas faced renewed challenges, with Israeli officials accusing Hamas of violating the accord after failing to free the last civilian hostage, Arbel Yehud, prior to releasing the female Israeli soldiers and Palestinian prisoners.
Conclusion
Trump’s proposal to relocate Gaza’s population to Egypt and Jordan has unleashed a torrent of criticism from Arab nations and humanitarian groups. The invocation of ethnic cleansing and the likelihood of widespread opposition make the plan highly improbable. However, its support from Israeli far-right factions keeps it in the spotlight as negotiations to stabilize the region continues.
As tensions in Gaza remain high and the ceasefire is tenuous, the international community watches cautiously, awaiting further developments.
