(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Park Seong-min = Senior officials from the United States and Ukraine began discussions on a plan to end the war in Ukraine at Hallandale Beach, Florida, U.S. on the 30th (local time).

The high-level meeting on this day was held again a week after negotiations were held in Geneva, Switzerland, on the 23rd on the peace plan prepared by the United States through behind-the-scenes negotiations with Russia.

Attending the meeting on the U.S. side were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Wittkoff, and President Trump’s eldest son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The Ukrainian delegation was led by Rustem Umerou, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Committee.

In his opening remarks, Secretary Rubio said of today’s negotiations, “It is not just about ending the war. It is about finding mechanisms and ways to ensure that Ukraine becomes an independent and sovereign nation, never experiences war again, and creates tremendous prosperity for its people. It is not only about rebuilding the country, but also about entering an era of remarkable economic progress.”

“Ukraine has enormous economic potential and tremendous opportunity for real prosperity,” Rubio said. “It is clear that this is not possible during this war, but we cannot achieve this by ending the war alone. So this is not just a peace negotiation. It is about creating a path for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and prosperity.”

Secretary Umerow announced the start of negotiations with the United States on his

“We are working to ensure real peace and reliable, long-term security guarantees for Ukraine,” Umerou added.

It is reported that at the Geneva meeting, the United States and Ukraine discussed an end to the existing 28 provisions that were evaluated as being overly favorable to Russia, and simplified them to 19 provisions that reflected Ukraine’s position.

In particular, since today’s consultation is being held right before Special Envoy Witkov leaves for Moscow next week and meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin, attention is being paid to whether the two sides will revise the agreement and end-of-war plan to better reflect Ukraine’s interests, such as more secure security measures.
