Defense and intelligence experts recently met in London to discuss how prepared Britain and its allies are for a possible war with Russia, and were unanimous in their assessment.

The conclusion was short and brutal: They are not ready.
The assessment was presented during a conference organized by the British defense think tank Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), according to CNN. Among the participants were current and former representatives from Nato, defence, authorities and intelligence services.

The participants believe that the challenge is not only about weapons, soldiers and money. They warned that Europe also lacks a necessary mental and political adjustment after decades of peace.
More money for a chronically underfunded European defense is essential, according to the participants. At the same time, they warn that a broad change of attitude is needed, both among politicians and in the population.

– Only a matter of time
Sam Greene, professor of Russian politics at King’s College London, believes the population now shows a greater willingness to take the seriousness to heart than many authorities seem to believe.
– I think there are signs that the communities are willing to have this conversation. At the same time, I also believe that we see governments that are still not completely confident enough to have that conversation with the public, he says.

According to Greene, Russia’s actions in recent years have made the threat more concrete for many Europeans.
– I think people are frightened, especially since this is becoming more visible. We are seeing drones outside airports and I think there is a growing sense that it is probably (only) a matter of time before one of these drones crashes a passenger plane.

NATO warning
The warnings from the experts come at the same time that the NATO leadership has sharpened its tone. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has previously stated that Russia may be able to use military force against NATO within five years.
– We are Russia’s next target. I fear that too many are tacitly satisfied. Too many people don’t know the rush. And too many people think we have plenty of time. We don’t have that. The time for action is now, Rutte has said.
Although Nato has drawn up concrete defense plans, the experts from the British conference warn that the plans today cannot be fully implemented.
– There is a plan, with numbers. But the authorities are not taking the necessary steps to implement it. We are still planning based on things that don’t exist, says Jack Watling, senior researcher at RUSI, according to CNN.
