Ukraine-US Relations: Zelensky Seeks Agreement on Natural Resources

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine announced on Thursday that his country will work “swiftly and very sensibly” on an agreement granting the United States access to its natural resources. This move seems aimed at easing tensions following President Trump’s criticism of Ukraine’s participation in peace talks.

Zelensky’s Diplomatic Efforts

In recent days, Kyiv has sought to strengthen its negotiation position as the United States and Russia engage in discussions to end the conflict. On Thursday and Friday, Zelensky spoke with leaders from six European countries and Canada, soliciting additional support.

Trump’s Criticism of Zelensky

Conversely, President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Zelensky’s involvement in peace talks. In a radio interview on Friday, Trump stated that Zelensky did not need to participate and had been negotiating “with no cards.” The president further claimed he had “had it” with Zelensky’s presence in talks.

Trump also falsely asserted that Ukraine started the war in 2022, a statement Zelensky described as part of a “web of disinformation.”

Controversial US-Ukraine Agreement

The proposed agreement between Ukraine and the US involves granting access to profit from 50% of Ukraine’s minerals and energy resources. Zelensky initially rejected the deal due to the lack of US security commitments. However, some Ukrainian officials believe a revised version now addresses his concerns.

Tensions arose last week when Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited Kyiv to present the deal, which Zelensky declined to sign immediately. Mike Waltz, the US National Security Adviser, urged Ukrainian leadership to reconsider the deal in an interview on Fox & Friends.

Zelensky’s Response and Diplomatic outreach

In response to the Trump administration’s pressure, Zelensky suggested progress during a nightly address to Ukrainians on Thursday. This followed a meeting with General Keith Kellogg, Trump’s envoy. Zelensky called it a meeting that “restores hope,” though he provided no specifics about the natural resources deal.

The president maintained that economic and security interests must be aligned and commented on securing a long-term agreement with the US.

European Engagement and Support

To diversify support, Ukraine engages in extensive diplomacy with European nations. Despite acknowledging that European aid cannot fully replace US assistance, the country hopes for security commitments or military aid to填补 gaps.

Recently, Zelensky spoke with European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Finnish President Sauli Niinistö. Additionally, he conversed with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Leaders from Spain, France, and the UK are scheduled to visit Washington next week to discuss their support for Ukraine and the necessary US assistance.

Conclusion

As the situation develops, President Zelensky faces significant pressure to reconcile US interests while seeking broader international support. His strategy balances diplomacy with Russia, renegotiation of the US deal, and strengthening relationships with European allies.
