UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy Rejects Cash Reparations for Slavery

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has dismissed the idea of cash reparations for former colonial nations affected by slavery. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of building partnerships based on skills and science sharing.

Key Points

  • Lammy stated that he does not view reparations as a transfer of cash.
  • He highlighted the UK’s past commitments to the continent and current need for a new approach.
  • The foreign secretary will be visiting Nigeria and South Africa, among other African nations.

Details on Lammy’s Views

In his first comments on the topic since the joint letter from 56 Commonwealth leaders in October, David Lammy clarified his stance on reparations. Lammy, who has himself come from a background linked to slavery, acknowledged the horrors of the past but stressed that current discussions are about looking forward, not back.

"There’s a sort of simplistic press debate in part of the media that thinks this is about the transfer of cash," he told the BBC. "It’s not about the transfer of cash, particularly at a time of a cost of living crisis around much of the globe, and certainly in the UK," Lammy said.

Lammy’s Plans for Africa

Lammy underscored his goals for future partnerships between the UK and African countries during his forthcoming visits. He plans to launch a five-month consultation period with African nations and wants to see the UK take on a more active role.

"Much has changed since the last time my party was in government," Lammy said. "The dynamism, the energy here in Lagos… There is so much potential."

Concern Over Sudan Conflict

Alongside his views on reparations, Lammy expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Sudan. He cited the humanitarian catastrophe and heavier loss of life than other global conflicts. During the UK’s presidency of the United Nations Security Council in November, Lammy plans to prioritize addressing the Sudanese conflict and engaging the parties to work towards a peaceful resolution.
