The animation company Ajiado confirmed the death of its former president and CEO, Tsutomu Shibayamahappened in the past March 6, 2026. The filmmaker, one of the most brilliant minds in classic anime like Doraemon, succumbed after a battle against lung cancer at age 84.

Shibayama was not only an entertainer; was the visual architect that sustained the film saga of Doraemon during more than 20 years. His last film in the franchise, Doraemon: Nobita’s Cat-Dog Space-Time Odyssey (2004), closed a golden era for the “cosmic cat”.
A legacy beyond Doraemon
Founder of Ajiado in 1978, Shibayama left his signature on works that defined the consumption of animation both in Japan and in the West:
- Ranma 1/2: He directed the first season from the original series, setting the tone for one of Rumiko Takahashi’s biggest hits.
- Nintama Rantaro: He served as director general of this long-running series.
- Chibi Maruko-chan: He collaborated in the direction of this iconic work of Japanese customs.
- Recognitions: In 2018, he received the award Lifetime Achievement at the Tokyo Anime Festival (TAAF) for its exceptional career.
Farewell in privacy
Following the family’s wishes, the funeral took place privately with his closest friends. The Ajiado company has requested to respect privacy of the bereaved and announced that a public memorial service will be held in one later date so fans can pay tribute to the teacher.
