US Strike on iranian Nuclear Facilities Sparks Global Debate

WASHINGTON D.C. – Airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear program have ignited international tensions, with the United Nations and various nations expressing deep concern over the potential for wider conflict. The strikes, reportedly carried out by the United States, have hit key Iranian nuclear sites, leading to a mix of reactions from global leaders and political factions.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres voiced grave concerns, stating he was “gravely alarmed” and calling it “a risky escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security,” in a post on X. He warned, “There is a growing risk that this conflict coudl rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.”

Details of the US Operation

Former President Trump asserted that the United States and Israel had collaborated closely, emphasizing his long-standing opposition to Iran’s actions. “for 40 years, Iran has been saying death to America, death to Israel. They’ve been killing our people, blowing off their arms, blowing off their legs with roadside bombs, that was their specialty… I decided a long time ago I woudl not let this happen. It will not continue,” he stated.

“There will be peace or tragedy for Iran, far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days.”

Trump also issued a stark warning to iran, saying,”there will be peace or tragedy for Iran, far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days. Remember, there are many targets left. Tonight’s was the most difficult of them all, by far, and perhaps the most lethal.” He added that if peace is not achieved quickly, the US is prepared to act with precision and speed, boasting of the military’s capabilities.

The operation was first disclosed by Trump on Truth Social, where he claimed,”A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site,Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home.”

Reports indicate that B-2 stealth bombers were deployed, perhaps carrying 30,000-pound “bunker busters” aimed at the Fordow uranium enrichment site, which is located deep underground. Israel, seeking to neutralize Iran’s nuclear capabilities, reportedly lacks a bunker-busting bomb of comparable strength.

The new York Times cited an unnamed US official, reporting that six B-2s dropped a dozen bunker-buster bombs on Fordow, one B-2 dropped two bombs on the Natanz facility, and US submarines launched 30 cruise missiles at the Natanz and Isfahan sites.

Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that flames were seen after the bombs struck the Fordow facility, with anti-aircraft fire and explosions heard around 2:05 am Iran time.

Brett McGurk, former national Security Council co-ordinator for the Middle East, noted that the operation had been meticulously planned over several years, stating, “Now, tonight, it has been used,” and emphasizing the importance of Iran’s next decision.

International Reactions

Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi had previously warned that US military involvement would be “very, very dangerous for everyone,” urging the United States to stay out of the conflict to prevent regional escalation.

while Prime minister Anthony Albanese has not commented publicly, a government spokesperson stated that Iran’s nuclear program posed a threat to international security and called for de-escalation thru dialog and diplomacy.

Defence Minister Richard Marles mentioned the presence of 2600 australians in Iran and 1200 in Israel seeking to leave, with Australian aircraft positioned near Dubai for potential evacuations. He noted that Australians in Iran were advised to shelter in place or head to the Azerbaijan border, while small groups in Israel were being evacuated to Jordan.

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley affirmed the Coalition’s support for US action, stating, “The world can never accept a nuclear-armed iranian regime, and today the United States military has taken proactive action to ensure that we never need to.”

Conversely, The greens criticized the international community for failing to establish “any red lines” for Trump and Netanyahu, accusing them of illegal actions. Senator David Shoebridge called for distancing from Trump’s approach.

Domestic US Response

Trump’s decision has divided US politicians, including republicans. Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson supported the action, asserting it prevents Iran from obtaining “the most lethal weapon on the planet.”

However, Republican congresswoman Marjorie taylor Greene expressed opposition, stating, “Every time America is on the verge of greatness, we get involved in another foreign war … This is not our fight.”

Democrats, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, have questioned the constitutionality of the strikes and demanded congressional oversight, emphasizing that “Only Congress can declare war.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
