The visit will commence with royal ceremonies on Wednesday. Trump and First Lady Melania will be welcomed at Windsor Castle by King Charles and Queen Camilla, featuring a royal salute and a carriage procession. Afterward, the president will lay a wreath on the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II, followed by a flypast of American F-35 military jets alongside the British Red Arrows. The day will conclude with a state banquet, including speeches from both the King and the President.

Thursday will focus on business matters. Trump is scheduled to visit Chequers, the country house of U.K. prime ministers, to meet with keir Starmer for bilateral discussions and a joint press conference.

The timing of the visit presents foreign policy challenges. Starmer recently fired the U.K.’s U.S. ambassador Peter Mandelson, citing new details regarding his connections with Jeffrey epstein. Downing Street had hoped Mandelson would strengthen the “special relationship” between the two countries. Two weeks prior, the Telegraph reported that Trump had invited Karen Pierce, Mandelson’s predecessor, to the state banquet, suggesting potential issues.

Trump and Starmer might potentially be looking to the tech industry for positive news. According to CNBC’s Ryan Browne, Nvidia and OpenAI, part of the U.S. business delegation, are expected to make significant U.K. investment commitments, potentially involving billions of dollars for data center growth.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will also attend the state banquet and meetings with Starmer. Bessent will arrive from Madrid, were he is meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng for trade talks and discussions on the future of TikTok, which faces a September 17 deadline regarding a potential American ban or partial sale.

The week is packed with events, and while state visits are carefully planned, unexpected moments are always possible.

Economic Data to Watch

Key economic data releases scheduled for the week include:

  • Monday: EU trade data
  • Tuesday: U.K. unemployment data
  • Wednesday: EU and U.K. inflation data
  • Thursday: Bank of England policy decision
  • Friday: U.K. retail sales

“The timing is awkward.”
