Trump Administration Revives Travel Ban, Citing National Security Concerns

President Donald Trump reinstates a revised version of his controversial travel ban, targeting multiple countries with new entry restrictions.

President Donald trump has officially revived his travel ban policy, a move he initially promised during his campaign. Citing national security concerns, the administration aims to block nationals from specific countries from entering the United States.

On wednesday, TRUMP issued a proclamation that imposes entry restrictions on citizens from 19 nations. The order, set to take affect on June 9, includes exemptions for lawful permanent residents, certain visa holders, and athletes participating in major sporting events such as the FIFA Club World Cup this summer, the FIFA World Cup in 2026, and the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The original travel ban, enacted shortly after TRUMP’s first inauguration in 2017, faced widespread criticism and triggered protests across the country. It was often referred to as a “Muslim travel ban” due to its initial focus on muslim-majority countries, including Syria, iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and yemen. While the list of countries underwent revisions and legal challenges, the Supreme Court ultimately upheld the ban in 2018. President Joe Biden repealed the ban upon assuming office in 2021.

This new travel ban follows a January 20 executive order that tasked the Secretaries of State and Homeland Security, the Attorney General, and the Director of National Intelligence with identifying countries posing security and public safety risks.

TRUMP stated in Wednesday’s proclamation that these restrictions are essential “to prevent the entry or admission of foreign nationals about whom the United States Government lacks sufficient data to assess the risks they pose to the United States.”
