Has Donald Trump declared war on Somalis living in the United States? The question arises as the American president embarked on Tuesday, December 2, in yet another outrageous, insulting and racist diatribe, which this time targeted members of the Somali community.
It all started in the Oval Office. According to statements widely disseminated in the American media, such as The New York Times, but also on Somali-language platforms, Trump, during a meeting of his cabinet at the White House, described the Somalis as“garbage” and estimated that they “do not deserve to be welcomed in the United States”.
At the end of the televised meeting, therefore publicly, the American president accused the Somalis of coming “from a place where there is nothing” and, despite this, “constantly complaining”. Shabelle Media adds that Trump also urged Somali immigrants to “return to their country”.
According to the same Somali media, leaders of the Somali-American community condemned the presidential comments, while emphasizing that these outrageous remarks come at a time when the Trump administration is facing challenges and criticism over American military operations in the Caribbean region.
