Donald Trump announced the “Patriot Games“, a whole new kind of competition which is intended to be organized for the country’s 250th anniversary: “In the fall, we will host the first-ever Patriot Games, an unprecedented four-day sporting event bringing together the best high school athletes – one young man and one young woman from each state and territory.”
A young man and a young woman from each state and territory… Criticism quickly flooded the internet. Indeed, this announcement recalls the principle of the Hunger games where again, two people are selected per territory. Except instead of an event where kids have to fight to the death in an arena, this is a sporting event.
Yet the event was derided by Democrats. The official X account has also directly made the link with the series of books and films. Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California posted the famous quote from the series“ May fate be favorable to youe”, while other users compared President Trump with the fictional president of the Hunger Games, Snow. One political commentator even wrote according to Huffpost: “We asked for affordable health care and Republicans are giving us The Hunger Games“.
A sporting event certainly… But one that aims to be grandiose. In the announcement video, the president adds that he would like to begin construction of a new monument in Washington “We’re the only big city that doesn’t have a triumphal arch.
