In a recent interview, former President Donald Trump addressed concerns about potential US military involvement in Ukraine, stating, “You have my assurance, and I am president. I am just trying to stop people from being killed.” This statement comes as discussions continue regarding a possible resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Trump suggested that while European countries are prepared to commit troops to support Ukraine’s security, the US could offer assistance “by air.” He elaborated on the capabilities of the US,saying,”We’re willing to help them with things,especially,probably if you talk about by air,because there’s nobody that has the kind of stuff we have,” during an appearance on the Fox & Friends program. He added, “I don’t think it’s going to be a problem.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later confirmed that the US would not deploy troops as part of any peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv. However, she indicated that Washington would assist with “coordination” and “perhaps provide other means of security guarantees”.

These comments followed a meeting at the White House,where Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders to advance efforts to end the ongoing conflict.While Zelensky and other European leaders described the meeting as positive, securing Ukraine’s post-war security remains a notable challenge in the peace negotiations.

Sticking Points in Negotiations

Trump has floated the idea of Russian President Vladimir Putin agreeing to the deployment of Western troops in ukraine to maintain a peace agreement. Though, Moscow has consistently rejected this proposal.

Furthermore,Russia and Ukraine hold differing views on territorial concessions and the implementation of a ceasefire before reaching a comprehensive peace accord.

Trump also discussed his plans for a potential bilateral summit between Putin and Zelenskyy,telling radio host Mark Levin that “thay’re in the process of setting it up”. Zelensky has expressed his willingness to meet with Putin, but Moscow has yet to confirm Putin’s attendance.

Switzerland’s foreign affairs minister, Ignazio Cassis, has offered his country as a possible location for a Putin-Zelensky summit, despite the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for the russian leader. French President Emmanuel Macron also advocated for Geneva as the summit location following the White House talks.
