US President Donald Trump announced this Wednesday an agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Greenland, which will be “very good for the United States and all NATO countries,” and suspended the threat of tariffs starting February 1 against eight European countries.
In a post on his Truth Social social network, Trump also announced “additional talks” about the “Golden Dome” missile defense system as it relates to Greenland, adding that more information would be provided as talks progress.
“Following a very productive meeting with the Secretary General of NATO, we have established the framework for a future agreement with respect to Greenland and, indeed, the entire Arctic region. This solution, if carried out, will be very beneficial for the United States of America and for all NATO countries,” he said.
He explained that, “based on this understanding,” he will not impose the tariffs that were scheduled to come into force on February 1, with which he threatened eight European countries, including Germany, France and Denmark, that participated in military maneuvers on that Arctic island.
He specified that the vice president, JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff, in addition to the necessary people, “will be in charge of the negotiations” and “will report directly to him.”
