The President of the United States (US) Donald Trump gave his first public speech after Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the election for Mayor of New York. Trump has now softened his stance and is willing to help the city after previously threatening to cut funding.

“Communists, Marxist socialists and globalists had a chance, and they only produced disaster. And now let’s see how a communist will act in New York,” Trump was reported as saying CNN InternationalThursday (6/11/2025).

Trump made this statement during a speech in front of his supporters in Miami on Wednesday (5/11) local time. Trump made a speech at the first anniversary of his victory in the US Presidential Election last year.

In his speech, Trump was also willing to help the New York government. He wished the city success.

“We’ll see how it goes. And we’ll help them. We’ll help them. We want New York to be successful. We’ll help them a little, maybe,” he said.

Despite his softening attitude, Trump also strongly criticized the Democratic Party for placing Zohran Mamdani in the election for Mayor of New York City. He said communists had run the city and reflected the views of the Democratic Party.

“If you want to see what Democratic members of Congress want to do to America, just look at the results of yesterday’s election in New York – where their party appointed a communist as mayor of the largest city in the country,” Trump said.

“Remember, I said we would never have a socialist elected to any office in our country? I used to say that… we missed the socialists, we put the communists instead,” he continued.

He added that many residents would leave New York after the election of Zohran Mamdani as Mayor.

“Look at what’s happening in other parts of the world — but now the Democratic Party is so extreme that Miami will soon become a refuge for those fleeing communism in New York City,” he continued.

Trump previously threatened to limit federal funding for New York City if Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral election. Trump also called for support for Mamdani’s rival, Andrew Cuomo.

“It is highly unlikely that I will contribute any federal funds, other than the required minimum amount,” Trump said when talking about ‘if Mamdani wins the election’ on his social media as reported ReutersTuesday (4/11).
