TrumpS Trade Policies Under Fire: States Unite in Legal Challenge

former President Donald Trump’s trade policies are facing renewed scrutiny as a coalition of states, lead by New York, has launched a lawsuit challenging the legality of his imposed duties. The lawsuit, filed in the Court for international Trade, alleges that these policies were implemented based on whims rather than a legal exercise of authority, throwing the American economy into disarray.

The legal challenge is supported by a coalition of twelve states, including oregon, Arizona, Colorado, connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, and Vermont. The states argue that Trump’s invocation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose duties without Congressional approval is a violation of the Constitution.

Constitutional Concerns and Economic Disruption

the core of the states’ argument revolves around the assertion that Trump bypassed constitutional checks and balances by unilaterally imposing tariffs. The lawsuit echoes similar concerns raised previously by California, highlighting a growing consensus that the former president’s trade actions destabilized the American economy.

By invoking the authority to impose immense and always changing duties on any product that enters the United States chosen by trump, the president subverted the constitutional order and brought chaos to the American economy.

Industry Alarms and Supply Chain Disruptions

Concerns about the impact of Trump’s trade policies extend beyond the legal realm. Reports from Axios in 2025 indicated that CEOs of major American retailers privately expressed alarm over the management’s trade policies, notably the substantial tariffs imposed on Chinese goods. These executives feared that the tariffs, which at one point reached 145%, would lead to price increases and disruptions in the supply chain, possibly resulting in empty shelves in stores across the country.

These concerns are not unfounded. According to a 2024 report by the Peterson Institute for International Economics, tariffs often lead to higher prices for consumers and reduced competitiveness for domestic businesses.

Trump’s Defense and china’s Response

In response to criticism, Trump took to Truth Social to defend his policies, claiming that the prices of petrol and food products have fallen very much, just like I said it would happen. He specifically cited a meaningful drop in egg prices, a commodity that had previously been a major driver of inflation.

Though, China has strongly condemned the unilateral increase in duties. A spokesperson for the chinese Ministry of Commerce, He Yadong, stated that the United States must entirely erase all unilateral measures against China and find a way to resolve divergences through a fair dialog. Similarly, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun urged the U.S. to abandon its maximum pressure approach and engage in respectful negotiations with Beijing.

European Union’s Energy Security and U.S. LNG Imports

Amidst the trade tensions, the European Union is focusing on energy security. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the strategic importance of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the United States. This comes as the EU seeks to reduce its dependence on Russian fossil fuels.

These energy partnerships, including the imports of GNL from the United States, remain of strategic importance for the European Union.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission

Von der leyen announced plans to present a roadmap with concrete measures to phase out all Russian fossil fuel imports, highlighting the importance of reliable energy partners like the United States, Norway, Japan and the Republic of Korea.
