Vision for a Global Economic Hub
Lee Jae-myung, a prominent figure in South Korean politics, has articulated a bold vision to elevate Seoul to the status of a global economic capital, directly competing with established powerhouses like New York, London, and Paris. This ambitious plan centers around strategic investments in key sectors and infrastructure progress.
Seoul should take a leap into a global economic capital that competes with New York, London, and Paris.
Semiconductor Mega cluster: Fueling Innovation
A cornerstone of this vision is the creation of a sprawling Semiconductor Mega Cluster, strategically located across several cities including Seongnam, Suwon, Yongin, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, and Anseong. This cluster is designed to foster a complete ecosystem encompassing all aspects of the semiconductor industry, from research and development to design, testing, and production. This initiative aims to substantially enhance South Korea’s global competitiveness in the semiconductor market, which is currently dominated by companies like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. According to recent reports, the global semiconductor market is projected to reach $1 trillion by 2030, making this a crucial area for economic growth.
Semiconductor Mega Cluster… will be a complete ecosystem that encompasses research and development, design, testing, and production. We will increase our global competitiveness.
Incheon: A Global Logistics Powerhouse
The plan also includes bolstering Incheon’s role as a global logistics hub. Leveraging its strategic location with access to airports, ports, and inland cities, Incheon is poised to become a critical node in the global supply chain. This development aligns with the increasing importance of efficient logistics in international trade, especially in the age of e-commerce and just-in-time manufacturing. Such as, the Port of Singapore, a leading global port, handles millions of TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually, demonstrating the potential economic impact of a well-developed logistics infrastructure.
We will support Incheon with the goal of global logistics hubs linking airports, ports and hinterland cities.
Smart City Initiatives and Enhanced Connectivity
Further enhancing Seoul’s appeal as a global city, the plan incorporates the development of future smart city infrastructure and improvements to the overall living environment. This includes investments in sustainable technologies, advanced transportation systems, and digital infrastructure. Moreover, the plan aims to connect major metropolitan areas within a one-hour radius, facilitating seamless travel and economic integration. High-speed rail projects, such as those seen in Europe and Japan, serve as models for this ambitious connectivity goal.
We will build a future smart city and expand the living infrastructure… We will connect major metropolitan areas in one hour.
