United States (US) President Donald Trump confirmed that no US government officials would attend the G20 summit in South Africa later this month. What is the reason?

Reported ReutersSunday (9/11), Trump emphasized that holding the G20 Summit in South Africa was an embarrassment. South Africa’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regretted Trump’s statement.

“It’s a shame that the G20 will be held in South Africa,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Trump then explained his reasons for calling the G20 Summit held in South Africa an embarrassment. He offended Afrikaners.

“Afrikaners (people descended from Dutch settlers, as well as French and German immigrants) were killed and massacred, and their land and farms were illegally confiscated. No US government official will be present as long as these human rights violations continue. I look forward to hosting the 2026 G20 in Miami, Florida!” Trump stressed.

US Vice President JD Vance, who was originally scheduled to attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg on November 22-23, is also confirmed not to attend. Trump has taken issue with South Africa’s domestic and foreign policies ranging from its land policies to South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel over the genocide in Gaza.

Last month, Trump set the lowest threshold ever recorded for US refugee admissions and said those admitted would largely focus on white Afrikaners. South Africa’s foreign ministry said it had taken note of Trump’s ‘regrettable’ posts and reiterated Pretoria’s oft-stated rejection of accusations that Afrikaners were being repressed.

“Claims that this community faces persecution are not supported by facts,” the ministry said, adding that South Africa’s past marked by racial inequality gave it the experience to help the world overcome divisions through the G20 platform.

“Our nation is uniquely positioned to fight for a future of true solidarity within the G20,” he said.

They hope to organize a successful summit. Earlier this year, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also boycotted a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in South Africa, who holds the G20 presidency from December 2024 to November 2025. The United States will take over the G20 presidency from South Africa.
