Former President Donald Trump has accused China of violating the trade agreement designed to de-escalate tariff tensions between washington and Beijing. According to Trump, the agreement was initially struck to rescue China from “a very bad situation.”
In a post on his social truth network, Trump stated, “I came to a quick agreement with China to save them from what I thought it was going to be a very bad situation and did not want that to happen. Thanks to this agreement, everything stabilized quickly and China returned to normal (…) The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprising some, has totally violated its agreement with us.”
The former president did not specify the exact conditions under which China allegedly violated the agreement. The agreement, which was the second of its kind under the Administration after one with the United Kingdom, aimed to alleviate the impact of global tariffs.
“Two weeks ago, China ran a serious economic danger. The very high tariffs imposed made it virtually impossible for China to trade with the US marketwhich is, by far, the number one in the world,” Trump stated.
According to Trump, the tariffs had a “devastating” effect on China, leading to factory closures and “civil disturbances.” he added, “I saw what was happening and I did not like, for them, not for us.”
The trade truce involved the U.S.reducing tariffs on chinese products from 145% to 30%,while china decreased tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%. These conditions were intended to last for three months while both countries negotiated a more lasting agreement. However, analysts have expressed doubts about the possibility of a complete reconciliation.

Trump’s recent statements add further uncertainty to the ongoing commercial dialog between Beijing and Washington. Tensions were already heightened by the announcement that the U.S. would revoke visas for Chinese students with ties to the communist party, a move that could affect thousands of students and has been described by China as “discriminatory.”
