BYD overtook Hyundai this year and became the fourth car brand best-selling in the world. An unprecedented climb, due to its impressive speed. Founded in 1995as a manufacturer of rechargeable batteries, BYD has transformed itself into just 30 years in a huge multinational that ranges from cars to rail transport, including energy storage and generation.
But when did BYD stop chasing the others and start leading the global electric transformation? A date could be 2012when he presented the Qin.
At a time when the transition to electrification was still in its infancy, this berlina ibrida plug-in it marked the brand’s transition from an emerging manufacturer to a global technological player. For BYD, the Qin was the manifesto of a new identity: no longer just economical or experimental cars, but vehicles capable of competing in design, efficiency and performance with the best international models.
2012: BYD identity becomes clear
From an aesthetic point of view, Qin Concept already showed its desire to propose a language of mature and recognizable design. The proportions were classic sports sedan, with a high beltline, sharp headlights and a sharply cut grille that anticipated the BYD family feeling of subsequent years.
The integrated front light clusters elements a LEDwhile the rear sported a clean, modern design, with a horizontal light signature that gave the car a feeling of width and solidity. No excesses, but a balance of shapes that marked the departure from previous models such as the F3DM, still linked to simple and not very personal lines.

Inside, the Qin Concept took BYD into a new dimension of perceived quality. The passenger compartment abandoned the spartan appearance of the brand’s first hybrids to adopt a more technological layout, with an enveloping dashboard and a large central screen oriented towards the driver. The materials, although still concept, communicated the intent to improve comfort and attention to detail, while the digital instrumentation and touch controls anticipated the direction that many manufacturers would follow in the following years.

Under the bodywork was hidden the heart of the project: the DM technology (Dual Mode)which combined a petrol engine with an electric drive capable of moving the car even in fully electric mode. This plug-in hybrid architecture guaranteed high-level performance (over 300 HP in total in the most powerful version) and very low consumption, paving the way for first Qin serieslaunched in 2013.
A seed that has borne much fruit
Over time, that prototype gave rise to a real one family of models. From the original Qin we moved on to the Qin Plus, available in a plug-in hybrid version with DM-i technology, more efficient and refined, and in a 100% electric variant (BEV).
More recently, the range has expanded with Qin La mid-size sedan offered both as a DM-i hybrid and as Qin L HOUSEthe new fully electric version presented in 2025.

The Qin L EV adopts the platform ePlatform 3.0a modular system designed for zero-emission cars, with solutions such as the heat pump for heating and intelligent energy management. The style has also evolved, with a younger and more dynamic designspacious interiors and even greater attention to build quality.
More than ten years later, it is clear that the Qin Concept was not a simple exercise in style, but a symbolic passage in the maturation of the Chinese automotive industry.
