The episode took place on November 24th, in the early evening. The parents, who live close to the Taipas Volunteer Fire Department, entered the fire station with the child on their lap, in cardiorespiratory arrest, at around 9 pm.
“We immediately began resuscitation maneuvers and requested support from VMER [viatura médica de emergência e reanimação]”, explained the deputy in command, João Ribeiro, who is also a nurse and was directly involved in the rescue. “We managed to reverse the stoppage and the child was transported directly to the Hospital de São João, since there is no pediatric intensive care in Guimarães”, he added.
On site, in addition to the firefighters, there was the VMER from Hospital Senhora da Oliveira, in Guimarães, and the INEM Mobile Psychological Support Unit, which accompanied the parents and professionals who were involved in the rescue. “In this case, everything worked as expected. It should be noted that the parents came directly to the barracks because they live next door and not because 112 didn’t respond”, highlighted the deputy commandant.
The funeral ceremonies will take place this Wednesday at 10:30 am, with mass in the parish church of São Clemente. The body will be buried in the cemetery of the same parish. The wake will take place from 5pm this Tuesday.
