Therapy Dog & Reading: Grötzingen Library Boosts Kids’ Literacy

by Archynetys News Desk

Reading training for children with reading difficulties – this is what the trained therapy dog Capper was supposed to make possible. On five dates in the past few weeks, children were given the opportunity to train with Capper in the Grötzingen district library.

The bright Chihuahua loves to be read to and rewards the young readers with his friendly nature, cuddles and little tricks. Reading training is enriched with playful elements that bring joy to the children and increase motivation. The educational concept of promoting reading with dogs is based on scientific findings. According to studies, therapy dogs not only reduce stress, but also promote individual learning areas such as motor skills, pronunciation, concentration and communication. At the same time, children improve their social skills and gain self-confidence.

Capper’s commitment was the focus of a cooperation to promote reading between the Grötzingen school day care center, the Grötzingen Community Foundation, the “Pfotenzwerge” initiative led by Manuela Gorber and the Grötzingen district library. Big thanks go to the Grötzingen Community Foundation, which secured financial support for the project.
