At the invitation of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, 22 legislators, legal experts and civil society actors met last week to work on a draft reconciliation law in the country.

The mission stated in a statement on Facebook that during the two-day workshop held in Tunisia, participants combined two draft laws that were drafted separately, one by a legal committee formed by the Presidential Council as part of its mandate, and the other prepared by the House of Representatives.

The group, which included representatives of the two chambers in addition to the Supreme Council of State and the Constituent Assembly for Constitutional Drafting, reviewed the articles of the draft unified law in detail, discussed the controversial points and proposed solutions to them, while ensuring that the draft reflects the best international practices in the field of transitional justice and national reconciliation.

This is the first time that representatives of the Legal Committee of the Presidential Council, and members of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State, have met to discuss the details of the reconciliation and transitional justice law.

Al Jazeera.. The Only Lamppost They Want To…

I have never stayed in a hotel during my travels to attend seminars and conferences – especially in non-Arab countries – except that I found the two Al-Jazeera channels: “Arabic/English” listed on the list of international channels, head to head and shoulder to shoulder with the globalized channels with a professional history of some of them approaching a hundred years – (BP NBC was founded in 1938, and NBC in 1926) – which was a source of fascination and attraction in the Arab world.

Since the day following its founding in 1996, Al Jazeera has caused an earthquake within the Arab region, which has become accustomed to targeted media based on security screening filters and a single point of view, which has not enjoyed – and still does not have – any credibility among the Arabs, while the BBC remains The British BBC – for more than 80 years – has been the only reliable source.

In the heart of the event

In this context, I remember a dialogue in the well-known Syrian play “Tishreen Village” in which the hero Ghawar Al-Tosha, “Duraid Lahham,” says to the café owner: “Turn on Radio London so we can find out what is happening to us,” in a scene that bitterly mocks the state of the Arab media.

The US And Most European Union Countries Announced…

Western Governments to Boycott Putin’s Inauguration, Canada and EU Among Those Absent

As Russian President Vladimir Putin prepares for his inauguration ceremony for a new six-year presidential term in the Kremlin on Tuesday, a number of Western governments have announced they will boycott the event.

The United States, Canada, and the majority of European Union (EU) countries will not have a representative at the ceremony, citing concerns over the legitimacy of Putin’s re-election. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that the U.S. did not consider the elections to be free and fair, but acknowledged Putin as the president of Russia.

Canada echoed this sentiment, confirming that it would not attend the ceremony. Additionally, an EU spokesman announced that the bloc’s ambassador to Russia would not be present, aligning with the position of most member states.

Despite the widespread boycott, France and several other EU countries are expected to send representatives. This varying diplomatic response underscores the continuing divide among Western powers on how to engage with Putin following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago.

Ukraine, a key player in the conflict with Russia, has also rejected Putin’s re-election,

President Biden Urgently Warns Netanyahu Against Offensive In…

President Joe Biden urgently warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against launching an offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah as the tension between the two leaders continues to grow, resulting in a mounting Palestinian death toll. The White House deemed the conversation between Biden and Netanyahu as “constructive,” although concerns were mounting within the administration as Israel ordered the evacuation of approximately 100,000 Palestinians from Rafah and initiated targeted strikes in the eastern part of the city.

Biden stressed the need to avoid operations in Rafah that would further endanger the more than a million people seeking refuge in the area. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is rapidly deteriorating, with northern Gaza experiencing what the head of the United Nations World Food Program, Cindy McCain, described as a “full-blown famine” after nearly seven months of conflict.

Public pressure for a cease-fire deal is mounting on both leaders, with Biden facing protests on college campuses and Netanyahu facing pressure from the families of Israeli hostages. The Israeli War Cabinet unanimously approved a Rafah military operation but expressed commitment to ongoing cease-fire efforts.

Israel announced the evacuation order for Palestinians in Rafah, followed by Hamas accepting an Egyptian-Qatari proposal for a cease-fire.
