Zappy Health: The Pitfalls of Online Compounded Obesity Drugs
Customers of Zappy Health, a telehealth platform offering affordable obesity drugs, faced unexpected complications when they learned that the compounded drugs they received were not produced by a licensed pharmacy. The issue highlighted significant risks in purchasing compounded medications online.
Zappy Health attracted many customers with its low prices, no subscription fees, and a user-friendly app that included a chat feature for patient support. However, the experience turned sour when several customers discovered through the app’s chat forums that the drugs they had received were from Ousia Pharmacy, which lacked a required sterile compounding license.
Understanding Compounded Drugs
Compounded drugs sold by telehealth platforms like Zappy Health are not generics but copies of name-brand medications made by specialized pharmacies. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) permits compounding during drug shortages, but strict regulations apply to ensure safety and efficacy.
Compounding pharmacies are subject to state-level regulations, and they require specific licenses, particularly for drugs administered intravenously or via injection. Sterile compounding licenses are crucial to prevent contamination that can lead to infections.
In the case of Zappy Health, it partnered with Ousia Pharmacy in Florida, which did not possess the necessary sterile compounding license for the obesity drugs it produced and supplied to Zappy customers.
Zappy’s Response and Aftermath
Zappy Health became aware of Ousia’s licensing issue in December and ceased its relationship with the pharmacy on December 13. Dr. Michel Choueiri, Zappy’s founder, described Zappy as “the biggest victims of this situation,” emphasizing the severe financial and reputational damage incurred by the company.
Zappy initially faced backlash for deleting a user’s Reddit post about Ousia’s lack of proper licensing. However, Choueiri clarified that the company had publicly apologized and removed the post only temporarily during verification.
