Influenza cases are on the rise, especially among children and adolescents. Health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination and preventative measures to curb the spread.
Rising Influenza Cases Spark Concern
South Korea is currently experiencing a notable increase in influenza cases, marking the fourth consecutive week of rising infection rates. The surge is particularly pronounced among school-aged children and teenagers, raising concerns among health officials and prompting renewed calls for preventative action.

B-Type Influenza Dominates Recent Infections
The korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reports a significant uptick in B-type influenza virus detections. A “doctor patient” is defined as an individual exhibiting flu-like symptoms, including a fever of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher, accompanied by cough and sore throat.
Recent data indicates that the number of influenza-like illness (ILI) cases has reached 16.9 per 1,000 outpatient visits during the 14th week of the year (March 30 – April 5). This is a considerable jump from the 8.6 cases per 1,000 reported earlier, highlighting the rapid spread of the virus.
Age-Specific Infection Rates: Adolescents Most Affected
Analyzing infection rates by age group reveals that adolescents between 13 and 18 years old are the most affected, with an incidence rate of 56.1 per 1,000. Close behind are children aged 7 to 12, with an incidence rate of 53.8 per 1,000. This data underscores the vulnerability of school-aged populations to the current influenza outbreak.
This trend is further supported by respiratory virus pathogen surveillance, which shows that influenza virus detection rates have climbed to 22.5% this year, reinforcing the ongoing surge in infections.
Vaccine Effectiveness and Treatment Options
Fortunately, the circulating influenza virus strains closely match those included in this year’s seasonal vaccine. According to health authorities, the vaccine is expected to provide effective protection against the prevalent strains. Furthermore, current antiviral treatments remain effective, as no mutations affecting antiviral resistance have been detected.
In light of the rising influenza cases, health authorities are strongly advising the public to adhere to respiratory hygiene practices, including frequent hand washing and proper cough etiquette. They also emphasize the continued importance of influenza vaccination, even at this stage of the season.
It is crucial to comply with the respiratory infectious diseases such as hand washing, cough etiquette, and mask wearing to prevent influenza. As a result of high occurrence in schools and adolescents, we ask you to educate the prevention of respiratory infections at school or home.An official from the health authorities
Free Vaccination Program Extended

- Adults aged 65 and older (born on or before December 31, 1959)
- Pregnant women
- Children aged 6 months to 13 years (born between January 1, 2011, and August 31, 2024)
These groups are considered at higher risk of severe complications from influenza infection, making vaccination particularly crucial.
