Unearthing Tomorrow’s Champions: Düsseldorf’s Innovative Approach to Youth Sports Development
Düsseldorf is doubling down on its commitment to fostering young athletic talent through its thorough “check’d” program, culminating in the annual Talentiade. This initiative aims to identify and cultivate promising athletes from an early age, providing them with the resources and opportunities to excel in various Olympic sports.
Talentiade 2025: A Showcase of Potential
The 21st Talentiade, held on April 5th and 6th, 2025, at the Niederheid sports park, saw Mayor Dr.Stephan Keller welcoming enthusiastic primary school children and their families. this year’s event drew from a pool of 5,301 second-grade students who participated in the Incheck’d sports motor skills test. Of these, 457 children demonstrated exceptional aptitude and were invited to participate in the Talentiade, with approximately 70% accepting the invitation.
Exploring a Spectrum of Olympic Disciplines
during the Talentiade, young participants had the chance to explore eleven Olympic sports, including basketball, football, handball, hockey, judo, athletics, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, and water polo. Experienced coaches from Düsseldorf’s competitive sports clubs were on hand to observe the children, provide guidance, and extend invitations to trial training sessions for those who showed particular promise in a specific sport. This hands-on experience allows children to discover their passions and strengths, setting them on a path toward potential athletic success.
Parental enthusiasm and Support
The Talentiade wasn’t just a hit with the children; parents also expressed their appreciation for the possibility. I think it’s great that the children were able to try so many sports here and continue to be promoted,
remarked one mother, whose daughter showed a particular affinity for athletics. Parents were able to observe their children’s activities from the stands, engaging with coaches to learn more about the various sports and the funding opportunities available to support their children’s athletic development.
The “Check’d” Program: A Foundation for Athletic Excellence
The Talentiade is a key component of the “Check’d” program, Düsseldorf’s innovative model for movement, sports, and talent promotion. As 2003, the sports office has been assessing the sports motor skills of all second-grade students through the Incheck’d test. The results are individually evaluated, and parents receive personalized recommendations via the Sportportal-duesseldorf.de website, suggesting suitable sports for their child and providing information on where they can participate in Düsseldorf. Moreover, children are invited to participate in follow-up initiatives like “Kids in Action” or the “Olympic Adventure Camp.”
The “Check’d” program is designed to identify and nurture young talent, providing them with the resources and support they need to reach their full potential.

Comprehensive Support for Aspiring Athletes
Düsseldorf’s commitment to sports funding extends beyond the Talentiade. The city offers a range of support measures, including secondary schools with a sports focus and a host family program that provides young athletes with a stable and supportive surroundings while they train with competitive sports clubs. The Pro sport Düsseldorf Foundation also offers various funding opportunities to support young athletes on their journey to elite-level competition. These initiatives collectively create a robust ecosystem for athletic development in Düsseldorf.
Looking Ahead: Building a Legacy of Sporting Success
By investing in youth sports development through programs like “Check’d” and the Talentiade, Düsseldorf is laying the foundation for a future filled with sporting success. These initiatives not only identify and nurture talented athletes but also promote a healthy and active lifestyle among young people, contributing to the overall well-being of the community. As participation in youth sports continues to decline globally, Düsseldorf’s proactive approach serves as a model for other cities seeking to cultivate the next generation of sporting champions.
