In a statement, police also reported that the bodies of the newly identified victims have already been handed over to their families.
The bodies of 24 people, including 11 minors and six foreigners, were identified after the deadly fire in a bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on New Year’s Eve, which left 40 dead and 119 injured, the Valais cantonal police announced today.
In addition to the eight Swiss nationals previously identified, the cantonal authorities announced the identification of another ten Swiss nationals (four women and six men) aged between 14 and 31, two Italians aged 16, a Frenchman aged 39, a citizen with dual Italian and Emirati nationality aged 16, a Romanian aged 18 and a Turkish aged 18.
In a statement, the police indicate that they also returned the items to the families of the identified victims, all of whom died in the accident that originated in the “Le Constellation” bar.
The identification task is being carried out by the Valais Cantonal Police and the Swiss Institute of Forensic Medicine.
According to the statement, work is being done to identify all the victims, both those killed and those injured. The Valais Cantonal Police will publish any new information as soon as it becomes available.
In the fire, 119 people were injured, including at least one Portuguese citizen (another is missing), the majority with very serious and extensive burns.
Authorities have indicated that they will not provide further information about the deaths out of respect for the privacy of the victims and their families.
