Maluku Police Investigate Allegations of Bribery in Illegal Gold Mining Case

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Recent allegations suggest that members of the Maluku Regional Police may have accepted bribes from a suspect’s family in an ongoing illegal gold mining case on Mount Botak, located on Buru Island in Maluku.

Background of the Case

The investigation revolves around a suspect known only by the initials ‘B,’ who is suspected of illegal gold mining on Mount Botak. According to the Maluku Regional Police, ‘B’ handed over money to police officers with the expectation that his detention would be suspended, although this claim has not been substantiated.

Police Response

Head of Public Relations for the Maluku Police, Senior Commissioner Areis Aminnulla, addressed the allegations in a statement on February 2, 2025. He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to upholding justice and promised strict action against any officers found guilty of disciplinary or criminal offenses.

“If the investigation reveals any breaches of duty or criminal activities by police members, we will act swiftly and decisively. This is consistent with the pledged responsibilities of the Maluku Police Chief,” said Areis.

Current Status of the Investigation

Suspect ‘B’ has been detained at the Buru Police Detention Center, where investigators are working to complete all necessary case files. Meanwhile, the Head of the Profession and Security Division has been tasked with investigating the alleged involvement of police officers in supporting the suspect’s activities.

“The Internal Security Team, Paminal, is currently conducting field investigations. We are awaiting their official report,” explained Areis.

Public Scrutiny and Accountability

The case has sparked public scrutiny over the integrity of law enforcement in Maluku. Such allegations not only erode public trust but also undermine the effectiveness of ongoing operations against illegal gold mining activity.

“It is crucial that all members of law enforcement maintain the highest standards of professionalism and uphold ethical standards to ensure the fair administration of justice,” stressed Areis.

Call for Action

The Maluku Regional Police urge the public to cooperate with investigators and report any suspicious activities or information that could assist in resolving this matter. “Your contribution can play a pivotal role in maintaining the rule of law and ensuring justice prevails,” said Commissioner Areis.

Conclusion

As the investigation into the bribery allegations progresses, every step taken by the Maluku Regional Police is under close scrutiny. The outcome of this case is anticipated to send a strong message regarding accountability and the commitment to maintaining ethical standards in law enforcement.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to uphold the law and ensure that all perpetrators of corruption face justice,” Areis concluded, emphasizing the importance of transparency and integrity in the police force.
