The law can be a maze for Americans trying to vindicate their rights, but at the end is supposed to be an exit leading to justice. Two cases at the Supreme Court this week are examples of how procedures and precedents can trap citizens inside a legal labyrinth.
The petitioner on Tuesday is First Choice, which runs five pro-life pregnancy centers. The faith-based nonprofit offers free ultrasounds and other support—but not abortions. New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin wants to investigate whether people who gave money were misled on that last point. “Without identifying a single donor complaint,” First Choice says, the AG demanded to see names and phone numbers for some 5,000 donations.
