In 2018, Vuong Tran, then 32, faced a profound depression that led him to attempt suicide.Surviving this attempt, Tran found himself uncertain of his place and future. He shared his experiences with community, generational trauma, and his volunteer work with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

“I WAS BORN and raised in Massachusetts, but I had moved to San Diego and gone through a breakup. After that breakup, I had intense feelings of shame and being a burden,” Tran recounted. “Over several months, thes feelings grew.I felt like a bad person, and I couldn’t fix things. The shame started to tell me I was better off not being part of this world anymore.I was only 25. I had a plan for my suicide, and I attempted to end my life.”

After surviving, Tran was unsure of what to do next. He recalled that his local church had mentioned Soul Care, a ministry offering one-on-one counseling in a safe habitat. This became his first step toward recovery.

Following this, Tran spent five days in a psychiatric hospital, which he identifies as the true beginning of his recovery. He found himself surrounded by people who cared about his mental wellbeing and connected with others facing similar struggles. This environment of empathy and compassion was a new and vital experience for him.

This experience highlighted the importance of community for Tran. Before, he had largely been alone and had never openly discussed his mental health. He felt he had been missing out on a crucial aspect of life.

Building Community helped Me Understand Myself

It was so critically important to me to be in a community of people who care and are vulnerable and talk about hard things, but also encourage one another and pray for each othre.

Tran joined several community and church groups after his hospital stay, including a young professionals group and a hiking group, to expand his support network. He emphasized the importance of being in a community of caring and vulnerable individuals who encourage and support each other.

Therapy also played a crucial role in helping Tran unpack his thoughts and feelings.
