Access to the weight loss drug Mounjaro might potentially be limited for patients despite meeting eligibility criteria, according to the Company Chemists’ Association,a trade group representing large pharmacies.
Chief executive MALCOLM HARRISON suggested that while these medications could “transform the lives” of many, the current provision within general practise (GP) settings might not be sufficient to keep pace with patient demand.
Weight loss injections are a relatively recent development in healthcare, and some GPs and healthcare professionals require specific training to administer them safely and appropriately.
Mounjaro also necessitates monthly patient check-ups during the initial months of treatment, adding to the workload of doctors.
Healthcare providers will also need to assess their capacity to deliver the comprehensive care required alongside the injections.
Certain individuals are currently ineligible for Mounjaro, including women who are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.
The medication is also unsuitable for individuals with a history of conditions such as pancreatitis or specific thyroid tumors.
Patients should discuss potential side effects with their GP or clinic before starting Mounjaro.
Where Else Is Mounjaro Available?
“it is indeed unlikely that the planned GP provision will be sufficient to meet patient demand.”
Mounjaro has been accessible through specialist NHS weight loss clinics since March.
Wegovy, another weight loss injection containing semaglutide and functioning similarly, is available on prescription to specific patient groups under the care of specialist NHS weight management clinics.
Both medications can also be purchased privately.
DR.CLAIRE FULLER, of NHS England, has stated that not all individuals will qualify for weight loss drugs.
“It’s important that anyone who is worried about the impact of their weight on their health discusses the range of NHS support available with their healthcare professional,” she advised.
When Can I Get Mounjaro If I Don’t Fit the Criteria Right Now?
Interim guidance from NHS England indicates that Mounjaro will be made available to approximately 220,000 individuals over the next three years.
The current plan proposes a phased rollout:
- June 2026: Expansion to include individuals with a BMI of 35 to 39.9 who have four out of five specified conditions.
- April 2027: Availability extended to individuals with a BMI of 40 and above who have just three out of five specified conditions.
NICE, the health watchdog, will assess the rollout’s progress and determine whether to extend access to more individuals with obesity.
Estimates suggest that around 3.4 million people are likely to be eligible over the next 12 years.
What About the Rest of the UK?
Mounjaro is accessible through specialist weight management services within the NHS in Wales. The Welsh government is exploring alternative arrangements, perhaps involving primary care, in the future.
In Northern Ireland, a new regional obesity management service will be gradually introduced over the coming years, featuring a community-based service where patients can access lifestyle support and obesity medication if deemed appropriate.
According to research by BBC Scotland News, vrey few individuals in Scotland are currently being prescribed weight loss drugs on the NHS. In Scotland, individual health boards determine which medications are available within their respective areas.
