The closest plans of the Metropolitan Metro are to extend two routes – on line 1 (from Lyulin to the Ring Road) and on line 2 (from Vitosha station to Studentski Grad).
This was announced to Radio Sofia by the director of “Metropolitan” EAD Nikolay Naydenov. He spoke on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the commissioning of the first section of the capital metro. It started on January 28, 1998 on a 6.4 km long line with 5 metro stations. Today, the underground transport serves 470,000 people every day, has 52 km of track and 47 stations.
We will increase the metro line by 3 km and with three new stations under Vladimir Vazov Blvd. By the end of July, I hope to put them into operation, they are in the final phase – said Naydenov. – This year, they will enter in two stages [в експлоатация] and additional trains. In total for the year there will be 12 new metro trains from two different companies. We will have additional trains for line 3, the one that will now be extended under Vladimir Vazov Blvd.
As for the nearest plans, the head of the Metropolitan announced:
“We expect, subject to favorable developments and the completion of the procedure, to be able to start by the end of 2026 or at the latest the beginning of 2027 the extension of line 1 from the Lyulin station to the ring road. This is approximately 2 km and 2 new metro stations. At the moment, the last procedures in connection with the announcement of the PUP for the expansion in the direction of Studentski Grad are being completed. It is about line 2, and the route will be extend it by 5 km and there will be 5 new stations. The passenger flow there is very serious and I think that this strategic decision will justify the transport scheme of the capital. If there is funding, it will be possible to start in 2027-2028, and as a realization it can reach around 2033.”
