Coffee was long considered a health risk. But now large data records show: drinkers die later and remain surprisingly fit.

Fulda – coffee is one of the most popular drinks worldwide – more than two billion cups are consumed every day. Nevertheless, the hot drink has been liable for decades a ambiguous reputation: sometimes as potentially carcinogenic, sometimes as a burden on the heart. A review now published in the specialist journal Nutrients (2025), however, draws a completely different picture – and causes a sensation in the research community.

Why coffee is suddenly celebrated as a life extender

The United States researchers have evaluated over 100 large epidemiological studies and meta-analyzes. The result: Three to five cups of coffee per day reduce the risk of a variety of chronic diseases and reduce mortality as a whole. The effect was particularly evident in a meta-analysis with 3.8 million participants: the risk of death dropped by 15 percent.

It is interesting that even decaffeinated coffee showed similar advantages. This indicates that not only caffeine, but also other ingredients such as polyphenols play a central role. Scientists suspect that antioxidant and anti -inflammatory properties are responsible for this protection. However, another study recently announced that sugar -containing drinks promote colon cancer.

According to the analysis, the risk of cardiovascular diseases decreased by up to 15 percent with moderate consumption. Heart disorders worldwide are among the most common causes of death – consequently a knowledge with great relevance to public health, as NextG.TV reports.

The effect of type 2 diabetes was even more powerful. A meta-analysis recorded a reduction of 29 percent. The risk of certain types of cancer, including liver and uterine cancer, also decreased. At the same time, researchers found indications of protection against Parkinson’s and dementia.

Coffee even shows a surprising effect on road traffic

In addition to the classic health issues, the researchers also examined everyday aspects. Particularly astonishing: drivers who consumed coffee or other caffeinated drinks had a 63 percent lower risk of accidents. This number underlines the immediate importance of the drink for security in everyday life.

Physical activity also seemed positively influenced: coffee drinkers covered an average of 1,000 steps more per day. A small effect, which, however, can have a noticeable influence on overall mortality in large population groups. By the way: A study warns that there is a lung cancer risk through ready meals and soft drinks.

Consumption is not very safe. The review refers to recommendations of the American College of Obstricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Accordingly, pregnant women should not absorb caffeine per day – about two cups. Higher quantities could be associated with an increased risk of low birth weight, even if the data is not clear.

The following also applies: the advantages relate primarily to black coffee. If it is switched heavily or drunk with cream, positive effects can be weakened. Some studies even indicate that sugar could neutralize the health benefits.

Conclusion of the researchers: Much more opportunities than risks

The team, which published the results in the Journal Nutrient, draws a clear conclusion: coffee is a safe and health -promoting drink with moderate consumption. Whether heart, diabetes, cancer or general life expectancy – the data speak for a protective effect.

However, most knowledge is based on observation studies. In order to understand the actual biological mechanisms, further randomized studies are necessary. Until then, one thing remains certain: Coffee is far from the health risk for which it has been kept for decades – on the contrary.
